
Senior Electrical Engineer
Astrobotic is at the forefront of advancing space exploration and technology development. We recently launched and operated the first American lunar lander mission since the Apollo Program. Beyond helping lead America back to the Moon, Astrobotic developed and operates reusable vertical takeoff, vertical landing (VTVL) rockets and continues to advance next-generation VTVL capabilities and advanced rocket engines. Established in 2007, Astrobotic is headquartered in Pittsburgh, PA, with a propulsion and test campus in Mojave, CA.
The Senior Electrical Engineer will be charged with managing the development of electronic systems of Astrobotic's portfolio of propulsion testing capabilities and the VTVL launch vehicle avionics. Experience in aerospace or space avionics hardware design is desired. On-site in Mojave, CA at the Mojave Space Port.
Job Responsibilities:
- Developing flight hardware avionics, including computing, signal conditioning, control electronics, filtering, data acquisition, and command & data handling (C&DH)
- Performing trade studies for electrical and avionics systems
- Contribute electrical engineering and management expertise in the area of design, development, and test of avionics systems for launch vehicles
- Analyzing and verifying different operating modes of the launch vehicle by designing, fabricating, and testing integrated avionics systems
- Selecting and researching components from various external vendors by verifying that the components meet project needs
- Developing test scripts or simulations for testing integrated systems
- Working independently with minimal oversight to deliver technical solutions
- Participating in qualification tests of flight design units
- Delivering technical reports of tests and advancements in electrical subsystems
Required Skills & Qualifications:
- Schematic and board design proficiency using software like Altium, Eagle, OrCAD, or similar
- Rapid prototype development skills
- Strong debugging skills
- Experience developing hardware from concept to working prototypes.
- Experience with communications protocols such as RS-422/RS-485/Controller Area Network (CAN)/Ethernet/Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI)/Inter-Integrated Circuit (I2C)/Universal Asynchronous Receiver-Transmitter (UART).
- Digital, analog, and signal conditioning design skills
- Hands-on electrical integration and test skills
- Minimum 8 years of experience in electronics hardware development
- B.S. in Electrical or Computer Engineering or Equivalent Work Experience
Desired Skills & Qualifications:
- Experience as Electrical Engineering technical lead for launch vehicles, rocket subsystems, Avionics subsystems, or similar
- Capable of programming FPGAs, microcontrollers, computer processors, graphic processors, or similar
- Knowledge of Range Safety and Ground Safety electronics compliance
- Knowledge of CPU design
- Knowledge of PC/104 design
- Experience with testing for MIL-STD 461, MIL-STD 464, or similar
- M.S. in Electrical or Computer Engineering
Salary
The base salary range represents the low and high end of the anticipated salary range for this position. The actual base salary offered for this position will depend on numerous factors including individual performance, business objectives, and the candidates professional experience. Base salary is just one component of Astrobotic's competitive total rewards strategy.
