Mechanical Engineer - Robotics & Surface Systems

As a Mechanical Engineer at Astrobotic on the Robotics & Surface Systems team, you will play a vital role in the design, development, and improvement of mechanical systems and processes, with a specific focus on our groundbreaking projects, including CubeRover, VSAT and LunaGrid. CubeRover is an innovative robotic system designed for lunar exploration, while LunaGrid is a revolutionary lunar power infrastructure that implements our VSAT technology. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams, including other engineers and designers, to deliver cutting-edge solutions that push the boundaries of space exploration technology. Your expertise will contribute to the successful execution of these projects and the overall growth and success of the company in the aerospace industry.

Note: This position may be filled at multiple levels, including I, II, Senior, Principal, etc. depending on the candidate’s experience.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Develop precision electro-mechanical systems such as passive and active mechanisms and mobile robotic systems related to egress, surface mobility and instrument deployment on the lunar surface.
  • Perform trade studies through prototyping, analysis, and testing.
  • Create and review CAD and drawings.
  • Hands on assembly of prototypes and flight hardware.
  • Create and execute development and flight qualification test plans and document the results.
  • Develop tools, methods, and best practices as it relates to robotics, mechanisms and flight system integration.
  • Coordinate between internal teams, external partners, and vendors.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Robotics, or related fields.
  • 3+ years of relevant experience designing complex electro-mechanical systems.
  • Proficient in CAD (SOLIDWORKS preferred) and lifecycle management tools (Teamcenter).
  • Direct experience sizing motors and gear trains.
  • Mechanism design experience including bearings, gears, cams, springs, etc.
  • Adaptable to a startup environment, able to self-start with minimal guidance.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment with changing needs and requirements.
  • Experience with geometric dimensioning & tolerancing (GD&T) including tolerance analysis, stackup and accounting for thermal and dynamic effects on critical interfaces. 

Desired Skills & Qualifications:

  • M.S. or PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering Robotics, or related fields.
  • 5+ years of relevant experience.
  • Experience developing robotics systems and mechanisms for aircraft, spacecraft or launch vehicles such as robotic arms, gimbal systems, geared actuators
  • Experience with high voltage electrical and power systems
  • Experience with power transmission cables or space rated cables and harnesses
  • Knowledge of the NASA Technology Readiness Level (TRL) framework, NASA systems engineering lifecycles and standards.
  • Experience across a wide range of fabrication and assembly techniques.
  • Knowledge of first order sizing calculations and FEA (ANSYS preferred).
  • Experience with Rigid Body Dynamics (RBD) software.
  • Knowledge of how to analyze components to harsh environments (vibration, shock, vacuum, etc.).

Salary Range: $95,000-$120,000

The base salary range represents the low and high end of the anticipated salary range for this position. The actual base salary offered for this position will depend on numerous factors including individual performance, business objectives, and the candidates professional experience.  Base salary is just one component of Astrobotic’s competitive total rewards strategy.
