Power Systems Engineer- Landers & Spacecraft

Astrobotic Technology, Inc. is a space robotics company that seeks to make space accessible to the world.  The company’s suite of lunar landers delivers payloads to the Moon for companies, governments, universities, non-profits, and individuals.  The company is also developing advanced space robotics capabilities such as terrain relative navigation, mobile robotics for lunar surface operations, and reliable computing systems for mission-critical applications.  Originally spun out of Carnegie Mellon University in 2007, Astrobotic is pioneering affordable planetary access that promises to spark a new era of exploration, science, tourism, resource utilization, and mining.  Astrobotic’s headquarters is in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, with a second location in Mojave, California.

Astrobotic Technology wants you to design, develop, integrate, and test power systems solutions for our future lunar lander product lines. You will be responsible for architecting elements of the power subsystem, maturing current design, assessing risk and reliability, and working with other discipline engineers to maintain system compatibility.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Perform power system related trade studies, component selection, and analysis
  • Support development of component specifications and system-level requirements
  • Support spacecraft power component testing and system integration
  • Coordinate between technical partners, vendors, and the Lead Power System Engineer to assess design progress, schedule, and risks through the full systems engineering development cycle
  • Provide real time operational support from mission control center

Required Qualifications:

  • B.S. in applicable Engineering field (Aerospace or Electrical preferred) or relevant work experience
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in power systems development, preferably aerospace or other high reliability industry
  • Demonstrated ability to carry out complicated analysis tasks, including developing the necessary tools/methodology and synthesizing results into higher level conclusions
  • Demonstrated proficiency working independently with peer engineers from other subsystems (e.g. Thermal, Mechanical, Avionics) to drive progress on assigned tasks
  • Technical communication skills needed for delivering reports and presentations

Supplemental Skills and Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with solar photovoltaic and lithium-ion battery technology
  • Experience with power budgeting process and system level energy balance analysis
  • Familiarity with power system architectures, power conversion, and power quality standards such as SAE AS5698
  • Experience using SPICE for circuit analysis/modeling and familiarity with power electronics
  • Hands on experience working with electronics and lab equipment
  • Familiarity with power system telemetry measurement and processing
  • Experience with FMEA process and interfacing with software teams to develop system FDIR
  • Ability to build analytical tools using Python and Simulink
  • Knowledge of spacecraft environmental tests
  • Knowledge of Range Safety and Ground Safety compliance
  • Familiarity with NASA-STD-4001, NASA-STD-4003, and MIL-STD-461
